Roman Numeral Rules

Roman numerals are represented by combinations of letters from the Latin alphabet:

  • I = 1
  • V = 5
  • X = 10
  • L = 50
  • C = 100
  • D = 500
  • M = 1000

Numbers are formed by combining symbols and adding values, except when a smaller value appears before a larger one, in which case the smaller value is subtracted.

For example: IV = 4 (5-1) and IX = 9 (10-1)

Roman numerals can represent numbers from 1 to 3,999 in standard form.
